eSIMbundle

Plan activation

When does my eSIMbundle plan start?

Choose whether your data bundle starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination, at a scheduled date and time, or immediately—and understand exactly when the validity period begins.

Quick answer

When does my eSIMbundle data plan start?

Your data bundle starts according to the start setting selected under Account → Bundles. You can start it when the eSIM first connects at your destination, schedule an exact future date and time, or start it immediately. Installing the eSIM profile on your phone does not by itself mean the data bundle has started.

The plan’s validity period begins when the bundle starts—not when you purchase the plan or simply install the eSIM. You can change the start setting before activation, but not after the bundle is active or has ended.

Installing the eSIM is not starting the bundle

The eSIM profile and the data bundle are related, but they are not the same thing. Installing the eSIM adds the reusable eSIM profile to your phone. The data bundle is the destination plan attached to that profile, with its own data allowance, start setting and validity period.

This separation lets you install the eSIM before travelling without necessarily using any plan validity. The bundle waits for the start condition you choose.

Think of the eSIM profile as the part installed on the phone. Think of the bundle as the data plan that becomes active for a specific destination and period.

  • Choose startAccount → Bundles

  • Change settingBefore the bundle starts

Avoid these mistakes

  • Starting the bundle too early
  • Confusing installation with activation
  • Ignoring the scheduled timezone
  • Trying to change an active bundle

Before you choose

Choose the start setting based on where you are and when you need the data. Starting too early uses plan validity before you need it, while choosing first use or scheduling a start can keep the bundle waiting until your trip.

  • Confirm the eSIM profile is installed on the correct phone.
  • Check the destination attached to the bundle.
  • Check the data allowance and validity period.
  • Know your expected arrival date and local time.
  • Decide whether you need data now or only after arrival.
  • Open Account → Bundles and select the relevant bundle.
  • Review the current bundle status before changing anything.

The activation setting belongs to the individual data bundle. Installing one eSIM profile does not start every bundle attached to that profile.

Your three start options

The bundle-detail page offers three ways to begin the data plan. Choose the option that matches your travel timing.

  • Best before travel

    Start on first use

The bundle waits until the eSIM first connects at your destination. The validity period begins when that first connection starts the bundle.

  • Choose an exact time

    Schedule a date and time

Choose a future date and time. The bundle and its validity period begin at the scheduled moment using the timezone shown in your account.

  • Use it immediately

    Start now

Request activation immediately. The validity period begins now, so use this option only when you are ready to use the bundle.

You can change the selection before the bundle starts. After activation, the start setting becomes read-only.

How activation and validity work

Install → Choose → Activate → Validity begins

  1. 1Install

    Install the eSIM profile

Add the reusable eSIM profile to your phone before travel. Installation alone does not necessarily start the data bundle.

  2. 2Choose

    Select the start setting

Choose first use, a scheduled date and time, or start now from the bundle-detail page.

  3. 3Activate

    The data bundle starts

The bundle becomes active when the selected start condition occurs and data access becomes available.

  4. 4Validity

    The validity period begins

The plan remains active until its validity period ends or its data allowance is used up.

Start on first use

This is the recommended option when you are preparing before travel and do not need the plan yet. The bundle remains in Waiting for first use until the eSIM makes its first connection at the destination.

  • Install the eSIM before travelling.
  • Keep the bundle set to Start on first use.
  • The bundle remains unused while it is waiting.
  • The validity period does not begin while the bundle is waiting.
  • When the eSIM first connects at the destination, activation begins.
  • The included VPN becomes available when the bundle becomes active.

Best for

Travellers who want to prepare before departure

Use this when your travel date may change or when you want the bundle to wait until the eSIM is actually used at the destination.

Schedule a date and time

Choose this option when you know when the bundle should begin. The account uses the date, time and timezone shown when you save the setting.

  1. Open Account → Bundles.
  2. Select the relevant destination bundle.
  3. Choose Schedule a date & time.
  4. Select a future date.
  5. Select the start time.
  6. Check the displayed timezone.
  7. Review the preview showing the complete scheduled date and time.
  8. Select Save scheduled start.

The current selector accepts a future date beginning from tomorrow. The validity period begins at the saved scheduled time.

Check the timezone

The scheduled time uses the timezone displayed in your account

Review the timezone before saving, especially if you are scheduling the bundle before travelling to a different time zone.

Start now

Use Start now only when you are ready for the bundle’s validity period to begin immediately. This is generally the correct choice when you are already at the destination and need the plan now.

  1. Open Account → Bundles.
  2. Select the relevant bundle.
  3. Choose Start now.
  4. Read the displayed validity warning.
  5. Select Start bundle now.
  6. Wait while the status changes to Starting now.
  7. Refresh or reopen the bundle page if activation takes a moment.
  8. Confirm the bundle eventually shows Active.

Validity starts immediately

Do not select Start now only to test the button

Starting the bundle begins the validity period. Once the plan is active, you cannot move its start time back to a future date.

When the validity period begins

Validity is the number of days the bundle remains available after it starts. A 30-day bundle provides up to 30 days from activation, not 30 days from the day you bought or installed the eSIM.

  • Start on first use

    Activation begins
When the eSIM first connects at the destination
    Validity begins
    At that first activation
  • Scheduled

    Activation begins

    Validity begins
    At the scheduled moment
  • Start now

    Activation begins
Immediately after the request is processed
    Validity begins
    Immediately when activation begins

The bundle-detail page shows the actual start date and end date after activation. Those displayed dates are the source of truth for the active plan.

A bundle can also end before the final date if its data allowance is completely used. An unlimited bundle may present usage differently, but its validity period still controls how long it remains available.

Understand your bundle status

The bundle-detail page combines your selected start setting with the actual activation status and dates to show a customer-friendly status.

Preparing

The bundle is still being prepared. Start controls may not be available until preparation finishes.

Waiting for first use

The bundle has not started. It will begin when the eSIM first connects at the destination, and the validity period has not started.

Scheduled

The bundle is set to start at the saved future date and time. Validity begins at that scheduled moment.

Starting now

Immediate activation has been requested and is being processed. This usually takes a moment.

Active

The bundle is active. The account shows its actual start date, end date and current data usage.

Used up, Expired, Cancelled, Refunded or Ended

The bundle is no longer active and its start setting cannot be changed. The exact label depends on why the bundle ended.

How activation affects the included VPN

The included VPN follows your active eSIMbundle data plans. Preparing the VPN account or downloading VPNclient does not start the data bundle. VPN access becomes available when the associated bundle becomes active.

  • Bundle waiting or scheduledVPN access waits for the data bundle to start
  • Bundle starting nowVPN access is prepared as activation completes
  • Bundle activeVPN access is available through VPNclient

Need help preparing the VPN?

Download VPNclient and save your separate VPN credentials before travelling.

Change the start setting

You can change the start setting while the bundle is still waiting or scheduled. Once the bundle becomes active, starting now or ended, the selector becomes read-only.

  1. Open Account → Bundles.
  2. Select the relevant bundle.
  3. Scroll to Choose when this bundle starts.
  4. Select a different option.
  5. If scheduling, choose the new date and time and confirm the timezone.
  6. Save the new start setting.
  7. Confirm the Selected badge appears on the saved option.

Changing the start setting does not reinstall the eSIM and does not create a new bundle. It changes when the existing bundle should begin.

What not to do

  • Do not confuse installing the eSIM with starting the data bundle.
  • Do not select Start now before you are ready for validity to begin.
  • Do not schedule the bundle without checking the displayed timezone.
  • Do not assume the purchase date is the start of the validity period.
  • Do not expect to change the start setting after the bundle becomes active.
  • Do not delete the eSIM because a bundle is waiting or scheduled.
  • Do not buy another bundle only because the current one has not started yet.
  • Do not assume an Active status means the included VPN app is already connected.

Remember

One installed eSIM can have separate data bundles

Each destination bundle has its own activation setting, data allowance, validity period and status. Starting one bundle does not mean every bundle attached to the eSIM starts.

If the bundle does not start as expected, check in this order

Check the selected start option and visible bundle status before changing settings or contacting support.

  1. Open Account → Bundles and select the correct bundle.
  2. Confirm the destination and data allowance shown at the top.
  3. Check whether the status is Preparing, Waiting for first use, Scheduled, Starting now, Active or ended.
  4. If it says Waiting for first use, confirm the eSIM is turned on and selected for mobile data at the destination.
  5. If it says Scheduled, confirm the saved date, time and timezone have passed.
  6. If it says Starting now, allow a moment for activation to finish and then refresh the page.
  7. If it says Active but mobile data does not work, follow the eSIM data troubleshooting guide instead of changing activation again.
  8. If it says Used up, Expired, Cancelled, Refunded or Ended, the bundle cannot be started again.
  9. Do not delete the installed eSIM while troubleshooting the bundle status.
  10. Contact support with the bundle destination, status, selected start setting and any error displayed.

Frequently asked questions

Does installing my eSIM start the data plan?

Not necessarily. Installing the eSIM adds the profile to your phone. The data bundle starts according to the option selected under Account → Bundles: first use, a scheduled date and time, or start now.

When does my plan validity begin?

The validity period begins when the data bundle starts. For first use, it begins when the eSIM first connects at the destination. For a scheduled bundle, it begins at the saved date and time. For Start now, it begins immediately after activation.

What is the best start option before travel?

Start on first use is normally the best option when you are not yet at the destination. It lets you install the eSIM before travel while keeping the bundle and its validity period waiting until the first destination connection.

Can I schedule the plan to start later?

Yes. Choose Schedule a date & time from the bundle-detail page, select a future date and time, review the displayed timezone and save the setting.

Which timezone does a scheduled start use?

The scheduled start uses the timezone displayed beside the date and time controls in your account. Review it carefully before saving, especially when travelling between time zones.

What happens if I select Start now?

The account immediately requests activation. The bundle normally moves through Starting now and then Active. The validity period begins when activation starts, so do not use this option before you are ready.

Can I change the start option later?

You can change the option while the bundle is still waiting or scheduled. Once the bundle becomes active, starting now or ended, the selector becomes read-only.

What does Waiting for first use mean?

It means the bundle has not started and its validity period is not running. The bundle will begin when the installed eSIM first connects at the destination.

What does Starting now mean?

It means immediate activation has been requested and is being processed. This normally takes a moment before the bundle changes to Active.

What does Used up mean?

Used up means the bundle’s data allowance has been depleted. The bundle is no longer active and its start setting cannot be changed.

Does the included VPN start at the same time?

VPN access follows the active data bundle. Preparing VPNclient or saving VPN credentials does not start the bundle. VPN access becomes available when the associated bundle becomes active.

Where can I see the actual start and end dates?

Open Account → Bundles and select the relevant bundle. Once active, the bundle-detail page shows the actual start date, end date and current status.
